External Application and Wiki Sign-in for OpenID Members
People who join Ma.gnolia with an OpenID will find that they can't sign into this wiki or 3rd party applications using the OpenID. An authorization feature is in the works that will support OpenID, but for now the workaround is:
1. Go to your Ma.gnolia profile (on the You menu), and save a password there.
2. In the application, use the password you just set with your screen name, and the application will be able to access your account.
You can still use OpenID to sign in as usual on the site. Contact Ma.gnolia support if you need help.
"Cannot modify this user" Error When Saving Bookmarks
This error is caused by a firewall or browser security setting that hides the referrer header from requests made to Ma.gnolia. To prevent unauthorized access, referrer headers need to be preserved. Check your browser security settings or consult with your network administrator to change the setting specifically for Ma.gnolia. This handy article discusses how to change browser settings for working through this problem.
Technorati Integration Woe
1. Copy the URL of your ma.gnolia link blog (found on the Links Blog tab of your Profile)
2. Log into Technorati > My Account > blogs
3. Paste the URL in the "Claim a blog" field at the bottom
4. Choose "post claim" then copy the URL from the piece of code that Technorati displays
5. Manually add that as a bookmark into your ma.gnolia account
6. Back to Technorati and "release the spiders"
Thanks to David Mead for figuring this out and posting his method! We'll have a proper fix soon.
Problems Importing Bookmarks
The most common causes of problems when importing bookmarks are described here.
- Unsupported source: Ma.gnolia can only import bookmarks that have been exported from a browser or from del.icio.us. We would love to import from every service out there, but just don't have the resources to do so at this point.
- del.icio.us API errors: We've noticed that the del.icio.us API sometimes produces bookmark export files with minor errors that the importer can't handle. These problems are usually very short term and fixed by del.icio.us.
- Unsupported formats: We can only import bookmarks saved in page source/XML. Some browsers or online services will offer Web Archive and OPML as export formats, but unfortunately we can't work with these.
- Edited Files: If the bookmark file has been edited manually, there is a good chance that an error in markup or encoding will be introduced. Because we're a small team and de-bugging this kind of problem is very time consuming, we can't provide support for edited XML files. Do note that Ma.gnolia ignores duplicate bookmarks when importing, so if you use importing to keep different accounts synchronized, we won't create duplicate bookmarks.
Daily Blog Posting Problems
Our daily blog posting tool continues to evolve. Here are the problems we've heard of so far, and the solutions.
- Wordpress blogs may see postings show up with missing thumbnail images and/or ratings stars. Be sure to use the Administrative account to set up the posting job, as a Contributor account cannot post the full content, for reasons unknown.
